Massive Riot In State College Pa.

Update Rioting Again 11/08/2011Why this time?

Some people have told me that they see no purpose in the New's Digest Section of Web Station #19, that the news is outdated and lost it's purpose. Well I can State without fear of any contradiction, that the report that follows was the first written report in the world about the rioting in State college. The riots were over around 5am by 7am there was a complete report posted here. Some people don't like this report because it spreads the blame beyond the actual rioters. This is the way I perceived the events. This report is based on interviews with a least 100 people who participated and or witnessed the events of that early morning.

(Saturday July 11, 1998 ) There was a violent protest held in State College. It was reported to be and actually was a riot. This riot was the direct result of government oppression. I certainly can not condone the behavior of the rioters. The thought of of people engaging in full scale rioting makes me sick to my stomach. I am also certain that this situation was totally alcohol related. Art's festival like the football games is a time when people gather to party, recent alumni, current students and locals all join together to party and socialize. I remember my first Art's festival, there was a keg at every house, roads became huge sidewalks, There was fine art, free music and plenty of peaceful parties that went on thru the early morning some barely stopping before kicking in for the next day. This weekend police attempted to bust up every party and large gathering of people's not at the art's fest. By setting up a clear adversarial relationship with the crowds assembled here authorities were asking for trouble. They received it, according to my sources between 1:00 and 1:30am police shut down every party in each of two large apartment buildings across the street from each other in Beaver canyon. Hundreds of people most drunk, most still ready to party poured into the streets. Someone began kicking a beer ball around and someone was hit by something that fell or was thrown from a balcony. A frenzy began, the crowd was then fed by the closing of the bars, an uncontrollable full scale riot ensued. Hundreds of drunks quickly became a mob of 2 or 3 thousand.

Five men shook a light pole until it fell over and soon light poles were dropping like flies, Beaver Avenue was closed and the area made semi secure, Bonfires were set in the street, trees were torn down. People still in the buildings began throwing furniture and trash from the balconies, those below used these materials to feed the bonfires. Police set up barricades and detoured traffic, they stood by and filmed the incident. Completely overwhelmed by the sheer numbers, State College Police called for reinforcements. Every on and off duty officer in the area was called in to assist. Police were called in from up to 100 miles away. State police arrived in full riot gear. The rioters were dispersed using tear gas, pepper spray and billy clubs. One person told me you had to run because police were just grabbing people and beating the shit out of them. The real danger here is the current laws, policies and there enforcement.
First off it's Art's fest who were these parties bothering? The parties next door? They made an attempt to shut down house parties before the bars closed, what they did was fed the streets and set up disaster waiting to happen. This all comes from the continued growth policies of the local government and the university. State College doesn't only keep growing, it is constantly pushed into growth for the sake of the local economy. So as the authorities become more and more intolerant, they keep adding more and more people to town. The university keeps getting more and more students. The Jordan Center, Beaver stadium, Arts fest and many other events constantly bring in out of towners. add a healthy amount of intolerance and shake, sooner or later you will get an explosion. The violence of this weekend will be back and continue to haunt this area until the real problems are addressed.

The following morning at around 6am I personally surveyed the situation on Beaver Avenue, Bulldozers were clearing the streets of debris as dump trucks whisked the evidence away. There was nothing on the morning news, reports of some sort of disturbance surfaced around noon. The 6pm news was the first to indicate the size and scope of what happened. However the official reports were that they did not know what caused the spontaneous riot other than there were drunk people present. Police said reports were suppressed as to not interfere with the Art's Festival and it's revenue enhancing properties.
