First Annual Citizen Freedom 420 rally

It began simply enough, a single anonymous note on the Internet, meet at route 420 to 420 at 4:20 on 4/20. First Annual Citizen Freedom 420 rally John Heinz Wildlife Preserve, Delaware County, PA... Once again, proving the prohibitionists, who claim that no one will come to a protest without music wrong. Several dozen people came, there would have been more but...

Myself and part time freedom fighter Sehlis arrived at the aforementioned spot around 3:30 pm. There were several cars in the lot, already, two men were playing guitar, another drums, others were handing out fliers for the Million Marijuana March, we politely turned down the fliers explaining we had our own supply. Across the street Federal Fish and Wildlife officers sat and watched. Parked right out front was a Tinicum Township Police patrol car, another unmarked car was also parked across the street. We asked around for the organizers, but no one would admit posting the message calling this meeting. The assembled milled around wondering what to do or where to go. By 4:00 police and federal agents had grown to six cars. The assembled took to the near by hiking trails, so that 4:20 could be celebrated out of sight of the watching officers. We were a few hundred feet into the preserve, when I realized that we had left the sacrament in the car. As we walked back toward the parking area, we were approached by three federal agents that indicated that we must leave the preserve and do whatever we were planning in the parking lot. Official reason, they claimed was that it was "tick" season and the area was unsafe.

As we approached the parking lot, we noticed an officer recording license plates. The plates themselves showed the crowd was from not only Pennsylvania but New Jersey, New York and Delaware as well. When we reached the parking area we were approached by Tinicum Chief of Police Robert Lythgoe, jr. He asked to speak to the leader of the assembled, I told him to best of my knowledge this was an anarchist meeting which had no leader. It was 4:20 and since he didn't ask us to leave, Sehlis asked if I had any protest signs in the car? Of course I replied a real activist never goes anywhere with out his protest signs. We took out our signs and started distributing them among the gathered. Chief Lythgoe came over and asked us what we were doing? I stated that we were going practice our first amendment rights by staging an impromptu protest. He replied if we stayed we would be photographed. I asked the purpose, he said it was intelligence gathering. Meanwhile the federal agents were flushing the remaining people out of the woods and soon we had over 50 people taking turns holding signs. Chief Lythgoe took pictures of everyone who dared hold a sign. John Meehan agent of the fish and game department wanted in on the photo opt, so he posed with us for the chief. We offered him a protest sign but he declined. However when I began to hand out Million Marijuana posters, he got in line and asked for two... Chief Lythgoe asked what it was we wanted from the government, ie the purpose of this protest. I responded that we would like to see sick and dying people, get the medicine they needed even if that medicine was marijuana. I returned to the car to get him some literature and hand delivered it to one of his officers. For about an hour people held signs and the police chief continued to take pictures not only of the protesters but of the license plate of every car which entered the parking area. About 5:15 Officer Lythgoe asked me how long we intended to stage this protest, as he had family plans to attend this evening. I told him I wasn't sure, but he could leave anytime, as we really didn't need him. He responded that he was assigned to stay until after we all left. Meanwhile dozens of people honked horns and yelled out support to the sign bearers, several near accidents and one rear end collision occurred as the cars slowed to read our signs. At 5:30 I gave a short speech thanking those assembled for showing up and reminded them that it is our right and our duty to hold such protests when ever we can. We collected up our signs and most of the assembled piled into their cars. So eager to be rid of us was Chief Lythgoe, that he ordered traffic on the interstate halted while the procession of cars left the parking area. Sehlis commented that it had been a good protest. I replied that any protest where no one is arrested is a great protest...
